Promoting Sustainable Deep-Sea Halibut Fisheries in Chile

At SPF, our mission is not limited to offering high quality products such as the Deep Sea Halibut. We are also committed to the conservation of marine resources and the development of a sustainable fishery that benefits both the environment and local communities.

History and Commitment to Sustainability

Since our founding, we have operated under the premise that responsible fishing is key to guaranteeing the continuity of our marine species. Over the years, we have implemented and improved practices that reduce environmental impact, complying with the highest international sustainability standards.

About the Robalo de Profundidad

The Deep Sea Bass (Dissostichus eleginoides), also known as Chilean Seabass, is an iconic species of the cold and deep waters of the southeastern Pacific Ocean. This fish is highly appreciated in world gastronomy for its soft texture and exquisite flavor. However, its popularity has also put it at risk due to overfishing in the past.

Aware of its ecological and economic importance, we have adopted strict measures to ensure that the fishery of the deep sea snook is sustainable and traceable.

Sustainability Initiatives

Participation in the FIP Program

We are part of the Fisheries Improvement Program (FIP), which seeks to raise fishing practices to the level required to obtain globally recognized certifications. This includes constant monitoring, fishermen training and collaboration with international institutions.

2. VMS tracking

We have implemented a satellite monitoring system (VMS) for all our vessels. This ensures that each operation is traceable and in compliance with the permitted fishing areas and quotas established by the Chilean authorities.

Seabird Conservation

To minimize incidental mortality of seabirds, one of the most common concerns in deep-sea fisheries, we have implemented innovative measures such as the use of bird-scaring lines and modified hooks that significantly reduce bycatch. These initiatives have proven to be highly effective, reducing the impact on vulnerable species such as albatrosses and petrels.

Collaboration with Authorities

We work closely with the Chilean government and other regulatory bodies to ensure that quotas and fishing regulations are respected. In addition, we actively participate in workshops and forums that seek the continuous improvement of fishing practices in the country.

Results and Future

Thanks to these efforts, we have been able not only to reduce our environmental impact, but also to strengthen our relationship with local communities and our international partners. We will continue to invest in technologies and strategies that ensure that deep-sea snook and other marine resources will thrive for future generations.

At SPF, we believe that sustainability is not an option, but an unwavering commitment. Together we can make a difference to protect Chile’s seas and ensure a sustainable future for all.
